Accommodation Umhlanga – Norman the animal lover

Norman Anstey donates a car he won back to SPCA.

“I had heard of the Animal Anti-Cruelty League before and I had listed them as a beneficiary on my account for many years. When they contacted me to tell me I had won the car, I thought my R100 raffle ticket can be converted to so much more for the League. The people here dedicate all their time to animals in need and my wife Penny and I thought it was the perfect way to give back to such a deserving organisation. I felt it would benefit them far more,” Anstey said.

Judi Gibson the league’s chearperson, said ” I am over the moon and blown away by Anstey’s generosity. We are actually three vehicles short at the moment, and it is such a humbling experience to find someone with such a generous heart. It’s a bonus for us.”

The car was generously sponsord by Barons VW KZN and Ryan Delaney the dealer involved said ”You wont find a more committed bunch of people than those at the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, who give their time and effort so selflessly.”

Well done Anstey’s we all salute you.

And the Rage goes on

The Balito / Umhlanga Rage is in full force and going strong.

“I wouldn’t say we are lucky to have these drunk teenagers here but they do bring in money to the local economy and we will benefit in the long run. I often have to hold myself back from scolding them,” said local resident Harry Davies

While Davies walked past a group of drunken boys and a teenage couple smooching on a patch of grass just off Umhlanga’s main beach, an elderly couple could not ignore the scene before them.

“You should be ashamed of yourselves. This is a public area and what you are doing is not meant to be done in public,” the woman shouted at them, “These kids are too much. This is nonsense. We were happy when we finished school but we didn’t go out and get drunk and sleep around to show that we were adults. This is just wrong.”

Although many of the school leavers are making a nuisance of themselves, volunteers from Red Frogs, an organisation offering assistance and support to the teenagers, are surprised that this year’s celebrations have been quite calm.

Jess Basson the Red Frogs spokesman said “We are amazed that there have not been any major incidents. As always, there is a lot of drinking and we encourage those who are drinking to drink a lot of water. In the past, we have had to rush people to hospital to have their stomachs pumped but this year it’s fairly quiet,” adding that the police were on hand to arrest unruly teenagers.

Bruce Hurley, of G&G Productions, which started the matric rage in KwaZulu-Natal, said ”When teenagers get into fights they are immediately restrained, have their rage passports confiscated and are officially kicked out of the celebrations.”

There is a high degree of police visibility in Balito and Umhlanga to help with unruly teenagers.

Accommodation in and arround Durban is full to the brim

One of the most exclusive and expensive hotels in Umhlanga, The Oyster Box will once again play host to Monaco’s Prince Albert and his South African wife, Charlene Wittstock.  The Monaco royals threw a lavish cocktail bash at the hotel in July to celebrate their wedding.

Wittstock has apparently reserved the Buthelezi suite, which is usually priced at between R 8,630 and R 11,890 a night. Billionaire businessman Richard Branson has apparently booked into the presidential suite, at R 50,000 a night.

Reservations have also been made at The Oyster Box for Hollywood stars Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio who are expected to arrive Sunday.

Former US vice-president Al Gore, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and a number of heads of state attending the 17th Conference of Parties (COP17),  will probably be staying at the city’s other top hotels like the Beverly Hills and the Hilton.

Durban’s eThekwini council speaker, Logie Naidoo, who attended COP16 in Cancun, Mexico, last year, said: “We have an estimated 35,000 delegates from all walks of life attending this event, from Greenpeace activists and billionaires to celebrities, which has created a special buzz in the city and keeps us on the international radar.”

Warren Ozard, operations manager of the Federation of Hospitality Associations of Southern Africa, said every reputable hotel, bed-and-breakfast and guesthouse was booked out.

Southern Sun Elangeni Hotel general manager Mike Jackson said revenue had virtually doubled compared with last year’s football showpiece.

Some hoteliers are even saying the event has dwarfed the 2010 World Cup in terms of revenue and occupation.

Emergency landing on Western Cape road

Thank goodness for good flight training, lots of experience and little traffic on the R43 between Worcester and Villiersdorp which saved the life of a pilot and his three passengers on Thursday.

It was reported by Die Burger newspaper that on Friday a Cessna 210, piloted by Markku Torppa, 52, from Somerset West, suddenly developed engine problems while flying a circular route from the Stellenbosch airfield.

“I have 20 years experience as a pilot and had never previously experienced engine problems,” Torppa said, “I had a choice. Either I would show them the winelands or Cape Point. Fortunately the wind was too strong in the Cape – having engine problems above the sea is not good.”

Torppa had three passengers – a visitor from Australia and two from Cape Town.

The plane was at an altitude of 2 000 feet – about 600m – when Torppa noticed the engine did not have power and saw smoke pouring out of it. “I was not worried, because pilots are actually trained to handle such situations. I just concentrated on landing.”

This was a lucky escape for the four high flyers and well done to the pilot and all concerned.

Durban, Umhlanga and Ballito Rage

Last year an estimated 65 000 school leavers (Ragers) celebrated the end of their school career in Ballito and Umhlanga. This year will be bigger and better if history is to be repeated.

Ballito and Umhlanga businesses are bracing for the good times including accommodation suppliers. “These kids come here and buy a lot of booze day and night… so they are a welcome headache.”

Twenty thousand matriculants are expected from around the country to attend the 2011 4U Rage Festival which starts next Friday.

The two-week-long event, which runs until December 10, is seen as South Africa’s version of a “summer break”, with pupils from all over the country flooding into coastal towns to party.

It began in 2001 with only 8 000 Ragers, and exploded to a roaring 65 000 in 2010 in venues around the country.

“Rage is about reaching out to our fans, listening to what they want and then delivering the largest, loudest and most engaging event experience of their lives.” says Greg Walsh managing director of organisers G&G Productions, “This year we are going large and are expecting numbers to reach well over 80 000. This is undoubtedly South Africa’s largest youth festival”.

Monkey Bag Backpackers, which offers rooms and beds to let and also camping on its lawn, has been getting close to 500 calls a day from matric pupils looking to confirm accommodation ahead of the festival.

The b&b owners are reluctant to accommodate Rages as there have been numerous incidents in the past of destruction and public disturbances. They would rather be empty than house Ragers.

This year accommodation is scarce over this period in Durban and surrounds as the COP17 conference has taken up most of the accommodation available.

Umhlanga Accommodation – Wind energy for Durban – COP17

Durban has three wind turbines for a wind energy demonstration farm in Durban just in time for the COP17 climate change conference which is about to start.

They have been installed in Durbans Minitown on the beachfront and are replicas of the much larger turbines which a local energy company is hoping to erect near eMpangeni to generate up to 80MW of renewable energy.

Florian Kroeber, of Astrum Energy, said his company was still seeking environmental approval to install up to 30 wind turbines near eMpangeni.

“Putting up a wind farm is such a long-term thing that just to ease the frustration a bit, we decided to build some little ones at Minitown for a bit of fun,” said Kroeber “Apart from coinciding with the UN climate change meeting, the Durban beachfront is a great location and we thought it would be an ideal educational tool and an opportunity to promote renewable energy,”

The erection of the Minitown turbines comes amid continuing controversy over plans by the eThekwini electricity department to erect two or three 150kW wind turbines at the Bluff military base before the arrival of thousands of delegates attending the Climate Change conference but conservation groups fear that slit-faced bats could be decimated by the spinning turbine blades. The debate goes on.

Umhlanga Accommodation – COP17

Hoteliers and entrepreneurs are preparing to accommodate the 15 000 to 20 000 visitors coming to South Africa later this month for the big UN conference on climate change (COP17).

If visitors are ready to look around, single rooms can be had for as little as R650 a night at the Road Lodge next to Durban Station, while the cheapest official deal seems to be the Mesami Hotel in Currie Road at R550 a night. Gateway Country Lodge in Umhlanga is offering R 550 per person sharing or R 690 single which is very good value for money.

Alternatives include trekking 74km southwards to the Blue Marlin hotel in Scottburgh (R390 a night single) or driving 47km northwards to Michael’s Nook Self-Catering in Ballito where you can rest your head for R490 a night.

On the Durban beachfront, bottom-of-the-range single rooms range from about R1 000 at the Beach Hotel to R1 800 at the Southern Sun Elangeni (or R8 700 if you fancy the presidential suite).

For those who can afford to sleep in style, the Suncoast Hotel and Towers is advertising its penthouse suite for R19 700 a night. If you fancy the more up-market room at the Oyster Box in Umhlanga, the cheapest option is R5 000 a night in a garden loft, R10 000 in a sea-facing cabana or R16 000 in a superior garden villa.

Similar tariffs are available next door at the Beverly Hills Hotel (R5 000 for a standard room and R11 000 in the presidential suite).

If you are really stinking rich, the Fairmont Zimbali Resort is where you need to be. Here, the single rooms start at R3 000 a night, rising to R27 000 a pop in the royal suite or a staggering R44 000 a night in the presidential suite.

At least 6 000 hotel rooms have been booked in the Durban area through the official COP17 booking agents, but an equal number of hotel and bed ’n’ breakfast rooms are likely to have been booked independently.

Sue Bannister, of the eThekwini municipality’s strategic projects unit, says most central Durban hotels are chock- a-block and delegates are moving further afield in search of accommodation.

Although most of the visitors are hoping to find rooms within a 50km radius of the city centre, conference officials said delegates were now booking into hotels in Pietermaritzburg, which requires a daily round-trip trek of nearly 200km.

Nina Freysen-Pretorius, head of The Conference Company which is assisting Durban with conference arrangements, says more than 100 buses are being provided by the national Department of Transport to shuttle delegates daily from their hotels to the ICC.

The shuttle buses will shift delegates to a central transit area from pick-up points at the Pavilion (Westville), Scottburgh, Ballito, Umhlanga, Morningside and the beachfront.

The shuttle service has also been extended to Pietermaritzburg, and will run daily until 6pm. A smaller shuttle service will run until 10pm, with back-up shuttle buses on standby in case some of the climate meetings run into the early hours.

However, conference organisers say there are hundreds of more impecunious activist delegates from non-government and community-based organisations struggling to find affordable accommodation in Durban.

With most of the cheaper inns booked up, some delegates may end up camping out in tent settlements, similar to those set up last year for Australian World Cup tourists.

Christmas Accommodation – Umhlanga

The Umhlanga promenade has been revamped at a cost of R 70 million and it is ready to show off this festive season.

Thousands of holiday makers are expected to grace our shores for Christmas and Peter Rose, head of Umhlanga Tourism, said that the area will be “bursting at the seams”.

The 2.8km promenade stretches from the Breakers Resort in the north to Durban View Road in the south. Wheels are not allowed, except for prams. However, running, jogging and walking were all becoming increasing popular along the stretch.

“Already foreign people come to the tourism offices and say this is one of the best promenades they have seen – our promenade looks stunning,” Rose said.

The toilet and shower facilities have also been upgraded, the park has been re-fenced and re-laid with new bricks and the car park area has been doubled. “It was too small, but the council has spent a substantial amount of money on it,” said Rose.

“We have a beachfront urban improvement precinct project that keeps the beach clean and safe,” said Rose. “We have many nightclubs and there is even a concert at Gateway Wavehouse which is a sell-out,” said Rose.

As usual Umhlanga Rocks is the place to be for reat, fun, sun and surf.
